A time and place where you get to revisit ‘remember whens’ while creating your tomorrow stories.
Is it a gathering of extended family for refresher hugs or a time to sing ‘for she’s a jolly good fellow and so say all of us.’ Maybe you are wanting to celebrate a dear friend’s achievement or revel in the company of a returning and much missed someone or is it a thank you treat for your adored and dedicated team. Doesn’t matter the occasion, a quiet rejuvenating hiatus or a celebration where folks come together for an event, when you book Wallingford, our know-how and your imagination are the rule book, so the sky is the limit.
Booking Wallingford for an exclusive weekend gives you the freedom to be creative - loll around day and night with your besties by the pool supping on mojitos or down ales as you frolic on the lawn notching up all sorts of shenanigans. If you were after a tad more structure, invite your dearest and nearest in for a ‘happening’ - small bites on the lawn, jazz thrumming tunes, pull up a chair for a long, lazy al fresco feast under the shade of our old growth oak trees. Sleep all day on a light dappled verandah before coming together over a candle lit degustation meal in the main dining room as you talk about us and we and everything good and bad, lost and found with the sense that this time will never end.

Once touted as the largest single-story homestead in the Southern Hemisphere, Wallingford boasts an architecture that speaks to the grandeur of yesteryear; open fires that crackle and mesmerise, wide verandas to take in the verdant vistas, a grand piano to yodel by and a library akin to Dr. Who’s Tardis. A private heated pool with its own pavilion overlooks the property’s 1800 oak trees grown to cultivate Périgord truffles. With only four en-suites and the single two bedroom apartment, the homestead is an oasis of privacy, offering quiet corners for peaceful reflection alongside the opportunity to connect with like-minded souls over a pre-dinner tipple in the ‘Great Hall’ or a frolic on the Wallingford green with the homestead’s Collies, Arthur, and Marley. For meditative meandering, forest trails abound, for the seekers of healthy indulgence, there is therapeutic massage, for those wanting to play, lawn games, badminton, and a grass tennis court.
Run by restaurateurs Jeanette Woerner and Chris Stockdale. Wallingford is an intimate dining experience. All foodie offerings are seasonal, sustainably sourced, and locally foraged. At capacity, the candle lit dining room seats 14 people. All menus are ever changing with the 9-course degustation a much-lauded highlight. “From the moment we arrived to the time we left, we had the most wonderful experience. We did the slow food journey package, which was amazing. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, nothing appeared to be too much trouble. I can't fault our experience, at all. Congrats Wallingford for your wonderful hospitality!”

“What an amazing one-night stay… so happy we booked it, but so sad we only stayed for one night... This place is the best we’ve been in NZ so far. Jeanette and Chris are great hosts, beautiful surroundings, swimming pool and rooms and last but definitely not least the food!! Chris is an amazing chef and our dinner (with the kids) was spectacular and breakfast was a masterpiece as well. this place will probably be off the route for many, but take (at least) 2 nights out of your busy travel schedule to spend them here and be spoiled.”

“When we read the reviews on Wallingford Homestead, we knew we were in for a treat, but wasn't prepared to be as wowed as we were. Everything was simple perfection without being stuffy or overstated. The welcome was warm and genuine, the service impeccable and friendly. Even the 2 lovely dogs were welcoming without being overbearing. The food is next level. I'm getting on a bit now and have eaten in some fancy places, but never have I tasted food as sublime as this. Chris and the team are genuis! Chris, Jeanette and the team. Thank you for making us so welcome. We absolutely loved our stay with you and can't wait to be back :-)”

“What an amazing place- beautiful rooms and wonderful accommodation. The degustation dinner was probably the best meal we have ever had. So beautifully presented and the tastes, out of this world. our hosts and chef( chris stockdale) presented a dinner that couldn’t be faulted and the service was excellent. What we liked was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere but very professional service. Every course was obviously prepared and cooked to the highest standard. breakfast was included in our stay and once again this was superb. We have travelled a lot in NZ and overseas but the breakfast we had here was one out of the box. This truly is a wonderful place to stay and the house and grounds are magnificent.

“We were lucky enough to stay 2 nights at this old homestead at wallingford. It was the middle of winter so we enjoyed open fires, superb food and a warm house. Our hosts could not do enough for us and the time passed by so quickly we left with regret. We are making a return trip in the summer to enjoy the outdoor pool and garden surroundings with what I am sure will be a wonderful lunch. Thankyou Jeanette and Chris.”

“Along with another couple, we've just spent two nights at Wallingford. Our already high expectations were exceeded. We knew that this historic homestead would be charming and spacious, and it did not disappoint. What we were not prepared for was the truly excellent cuisine.”

“A beautiful expansive homestead set amongst lush lawns and flower beds, old trees and views across farmland. Our room was beautiful with a gorgeous en suite, warm and very comfortable. Dinner is an experience with an amazing chef cresting works of art almost too beautiful to eat and tasting as good as they look! An incredible dessert finished off 7 or 8 courses, followed by a nightcap in front of the fire. Service is impeccable, warm and friendly. This is a truly special jewel in Central Hawke’s Bay.”

“We had a wonderful stay at Wallingford Homestead to celebrate a special wedding anniversary. The homestead is full of character; a refreshing change from the predictable bland characterless modern hotels. The room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely view out on to the gardens. We had breakfast and afternoon tea on the verandah adjoining our room. Chris and Jeanette and staff go the extra mile to ensure that guests have a thoroughly enjoyable stay. A stand out is the quality of the food. Chris is an excellent chef and Jeanette’s knowledge of local wines made the meals a real pleasure. Highly recommended”

“Wallingford homestead has the wow factor. exceptional garden-fresh food, service with a smile, and rich family history combine to create an experience you will want to share with all your family and friends. We arrived at sunset and explored the grounds with g&t in hand and pet dogs at our feet. Now, I am sitting outside, in autumnal sunshine, listening to songbirds and blissful music that brought a sense of calm to our morning breakfast of freshly smoked salmon, newly baked bread and a variety of small dishes that excited our palate. Similarly, our five-course set dinner menu introduced us to exquisite flavours: kina in black linguine and my personal pièce de résistance, paua with smoked tomato. Wow!”

“We had a wonderful time with Jeanette, a superb host and Chris’s cooking was the best we have had ever experienced! We have travelled extensively (Michelin star restaurants) in many countries and great places here in NZ. Chris tops the lot! Never mind the enjoyment of Marley & Arthur (beautiful boarder collies).”
