Your Slow Food Journey…
Welcome Drink on Arrival
We’ll settle you in with your tipple of choice, from the best of the region’s producers. Try a negroni made with the purest ingredients from Hastings Distillers. Celebrate with a glass of Alpha Domus. Sample the passion of local breweries, or leave it to us to whip you up something different and delicious.
First Night
We call it the feast of flavours. This convivial shared dining experience celebrates the joy of being in the moment with like- minded souls. Unadulterated, earthy plates appear in quick succession at your table to be ‘oohed’, ‘aahed’ and ‘dialogued’ over.
First Morning
When Chef’s breakfast gets the nod from acclaimed chefs (think Mr Mangan of Glass Brasserie fame), you know he’s earned the gong. Expect the likes of freshly baked sourdough, jams from fruiting trees, butter from cows and all things seasonal and delicious.
Truffle Grove Walk
Wallingford is home to 1,800 truffle trees. Whether or not you’re here during the winter harvesting season, we’d love you to come and see the grove for yourself at any time of year, as well as explore other areas of the estate and a part of the QEII nature walk.
Charcuterie Plate
If you opt for a walk you can take it with you.
Alternatively, enjoy it poolside and on your veranda.
Second Night
Saturday night is the big event. The degustation diner offers 9 small plates. Each is a story that honours raw elements from the immediate surrounds; ALL grown, harvested, caught or bred at our fingertips. Everything that can be made onsite; is - think ravioli, halloumi, labneh, jams, ice creams, sourdough, danishes - and all dishes are wildly creative reflections of what we are able to utilise from our local environs.
Breakfast
With only a handful of people in the house, we know you a little by now, so our farewell will be a breakfast that speaks to your loves. A kedgeree if you hanker for fish; scrambled eggs for fans of Bills (Chris was the head chef many moons ago); for the vegos, a tacu-tacu.
Sunday Sourdough Session
Dust up on your new skills and join Chris in the kitchen for round two. Our mid-morning sourdough making session with our chef Christopher is a foodie favourite. Take home your warm loaf to enjoy the fruit of your labours.

“Chris Stockdale, an award-winning chef, will treat you to true feasts, many of which are crafted by food produced on, or near, the homestead. The dinner and breakfast—both included in the package—were amongst the best and biggest I've had in New Zealand.”

“From the moment we arrived to the time we left, we had the most wonderful experience. We did the slow food journey package, which was amazing. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, nothing appeared to be too much trouble. I can't fault our experience, at all. Congrats Wallingford for your wonderful hospitality!”

“What an amazing one-night stay… so happy we booked it, but so sad we only stayed for one night... This place is the best we’ve been in NZ so far. Jeanette and Chris are great hosts, beautiful surroundings, swimming pool and rooms and last but definitely not least the food!! Chris is an amazing chef and our dinner (with the kids) was spectacular and breakfast was a masterpiece as well. this place will probably be off the route for many, but take (at least) 2 nights out of your busy travel schedule to spend them here and be spoiled.”

“When we read the reviews on Wallingford Homestead, we knew we were in for a treat, but wasn't prepared to be as wowed as we were. Everything was simple perfection without being stuffy or overstated. The welcome was warm and genuine, the service impeccable and friendly. Even the 2 lovely dogs were welcoming without being overbearing. The food is next level. I'm getting on a bit now and have eaten in some fancy places, but never have I tasted food as sublime as this. Chris and the team are genuis! Chris, Jeanette and the team. Thank you for making us so welcome. We absolutely loved our stay with you and can't wait to be back :-)”

“What an amazing place- beautiful rooms and wonderful accommodation. The degustation dinner was probably the best meal we have ever had. So beautifully presented and the tastes, out of this world. our hosts and chef( chris stockdale) presented a dinner that couldn’t be faulted and the service was excellent. What we liked was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere but very professional service. Every course was obviously prepared and cooked to the highest standard. breakfast was included in our stay and once again this was superb. We have travelled a lot in NZ and overseas but the breakfast we had here was one out of the box. This truly is a wonderful place to stay and the house and grounds are magnificent.

“We were lucky enough to stay 2 nights at this old homestead at wallingford. It was the middle of winter so we enjoyed open fires, superb food and a warm house. Our hosts could not do enough for us and the time passed by so quickly we left with regret. We are making a return trip in the summer to enjoy the outdoor pool and garden surroundings with what I am sure will be a wonderful lunch. Thankyou Jeanette and Chris.”

“Along with another couple, we've just spent two nights at Wallingford. Our already high expectations were exceeded. We knew that this historic homestead would be charming and spacious, and it did not disappoint. What we were not prepared for was the truly excellent cuisine.”

“A beautiful expansive homestead set amongst lush lawns and flower beds, old trees and views across farmland. Our room was beautiful with a gorgeous en suite, warm and very comfortable. Dinner is an experience with an amazing chef cresting works of art almost too beautiful to eat and tasting as good as they look! An incredible dessert finished off 7 or 8 courses, followed by a nightcap in front of the fire. Service is impeccable, warm and friendly. This is a truly special jewel in Central Hawke’s Bay.”

“We had a wonderful stay at Wallingford Homestead to celebrate a special wedding anniversary. The homestead is full of character; a refreshing change from the predictable bland characterless modern hotels. The room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely view out on to the gardens. We had breakfast and afternoon tea on the verandah adjoining our room. Chris and Jeanette and staff go the extra mile to ensure that guests have a thoroughly enjoyable stay. A stand out is the quality of the food. Chris is an excellent chef and Jeanette’s knowledge of local wines made the meals a real pleasure. Highly recommended”

“Wallingford homestead has the wow factor. exceptional garden-fresh food, service with a smile, and rich family history combine to create an experience you will want to share with all your family and friends. We arrived at sunset and explored the grounds with g&t in hand and pet dogs at our feet. Now, I am sitting outside, in autumnal sunshine, listening to songbirds and blissful music that brought a sense of calm to our morning breakfast of freshly smoked salmon, newly baked bread and a variety of small dishes that excited our palate. Similarly, our five-course set dinner menu introduced us to exquisite flavours: kina in black linguine and my personal pièce de résistance, paua with smoked tomato. Wow!”

“We had a wonderful time with Jeanette, a superb host and Chris’s cooking was the best we have had ever experienced! We have travelled extensively (Michelin star restaurants) in many countries and great places here in NZ. Chris tops the lot! Never mind the enjoyment of Marley & Arthur (beautiful boarder collies).”
